What does it really cost to start a profitable blog?

When I decided to start a blog, I was amazed at the number of people who didn't know you could make money blogging or that it even costs money to blog. Of course, you can create blogs for free on platforms like blogger, but you will be severely limited in the money making department. I suggest creating a self-hosted WordPress blog to maximize your earning potential.

How much does it really cost to start a profitable blog? They Really Live!

Many people start blogging as a hobby. Guilty!

Whether you are blogging for fun or as a business, it is important to set-up your blog the correct way. Because HELLLLOOO?! We all want to make money!

Domain registration pricing can vary between registrars, but you can expect to pay between 10-20 dollars per year. I registered They Really Live! through SiteGround for $15/year.

Price will vary for hosting depending on the plan you choose. Factors such as traffic, speed, and the amount of web space you need will ultimately determine your cost. You can sign up for StartUp hosting for as little as $3.95/month with SiteGround. $47.40/year

There are many FREE WordPress themes but to create a more beautiful and unique site, a paid theme is the way to go. You can find themes on Etsy, Creative Market, ThemeForest, or even by a quick google search. Expect to pay a one time fee of $30-60.

You need to create beautiful images for Pinterest and your blog. Canva offers a FREE option. It is simple, easy to use, and perfect for beginners. You can choose paid options such as Adobe Create Space or PicMonkey, but Canva offers everything you need for FREE!

Making a logo on Canva for FREE is an option but if you would like something a little more complex, check out Fiverr. When hiring a freelancer on Fiverr, make sure you look at all their examples, reviews, and ratings. You can get a logo designed for as little as $5. For the purpose of this post, we will assume you choose FREE.

If you are not a photographer, you will need access to stock photos. My favorite sites for free stock photos are Unsplash and Kaboompics. You can also choose to pay for a stock photo subscription. I suggest either HauteStock or AdobeStock, but there are many to choose from. It all depends on your style. For the purpose of this post, we will assume you choose FREE.

To me, social media scheduling is a must! Social Media is a time suck and any money you can spend to prevent wasted hours is worth it to me. I use both Tailwind and BoardBooster for Pinterest. Pinterest is a major source of traffic for a lot of blogs so getting your Pinterest rocking is a must. I use BoardBooster to source over 1000 pins/month for $10. That is 1000 pins that I do not have to search for and pin myself. BoardBooster does that for me! I use Tailwind to schedule my pins from my website to my boards and group boards for another $10/month. Plan on budgeting $20/month for Pinterest scheduling. $240/year

A personalized email address not only looks awesome but also legitimizes your blog or business. To get an email address @yourdomain, I recommend Google GSuite. You will not only love your new email address; you will love all the features of GSuite. Google bills monthly at $5. $60/year

When you ask bloggers who have been around awhile, most of them will tell you they regret not building their email list sooner. Your email list is a group of people who like YOUR content. They are YOUR audience and they most likely want to hear from YOU. You can decide how often you email them and what. Is it a new blog post? Or maybe even new product! Email lists are invaluable. Start this sooner rather than later. I use and suggest Constant Contact. The first 2 months are free and then it's $20/month. $200/1st Year

I love Grammarly! Grammarly finds and corrects writing errors for you. I will be honest, I have proofread a post 3 times and thought it was perfect until I ran it through Grammarly only to find there were 14 errors. Excellent grammar is a must! Grammarly has a FREE or paid version.

Correct all grammar errors with Grammarly!

A key to creating a profitable blog is using Affiliate links to monetize your site. Pretty links turns long, ugly links into more appealing, relevant links. https://prettylinks.com?aff=courtneycarrera → theyreallylive.com/prettylinks. Pretty links also has some other awesome features that are super beneficial if you use a lot of marketing links. You can easily “nofollow” all of your affiliate links, which Google loves, and you can easily access all of your Pretty Links when creating pages and posts. So convenient! $57/year and so worth it!

As you can see, blogging can cost as little or as much as you can afford. I do believe you will get out of your blog what you put into it and if you want to create a profitable blog, this is what I believe to be the base cost for your first year.

1st Year Total: $682

$682/year or $57.00/month! I have said before that one of my favorite things about blogging is the low overhead cost and here it is! $66.00/month! What other business or hobby can you actively pursue for just $57.00/month? If you ask me, this is a no-brainer!
